Fifth Grade at Franklin Road Christian School
History and science are subjects that take center stage in fifth grade as work becomes more content-oriented. This year is devoted to world history and geography. Students also do a unit on Michigan history and government. A trip to the state capital in Lansing is a hands on experience to how our state government works.
Science camp is a fifth grade favorite. This 3- day classroom in the great outdoors is filled with solid teaching based on God’s creation. Other topics covered this year include plants, ecosystems, human body, and solar system.
Students do a comprehensive study of the lives of various Bible characters in the Old Testament. We look at the choices these characters have made, the bad and the good, and discuss their relevance in our lives today. Memorized scripture is required on a weekly basis.
Mathematical concepts also become more challenging as students work with decimals, multiplication and division of three-digit numbers, metric system, fractions, percents, geometry, and problem solving.
Literacy is still a high priority.
Students publish their own pieces of writing from poetry, stories, speeches, plays, and book reports. Silent reading from the different genres are encouraged. Reading various literature helps students develop reading skills and improves their comprehension as well.
Special electives also expand the fifth grade curriculum. In addition to chapel, vocal music, art, Spanish, library, physical education, and computer keyboarding, students take part in the fifth grade band. This includes small group sectionals as well as a full band experience.
Overall, fifth grade is an exciting year of growing opportunities. The accumulation of all the above studies makes for a stimulating environment for your child’s final year of elementary school.
